Eight of the best French restaurants in California, according to Michelin
PAPILLES

What the Michelin inspectors said…
Sure, its unassuming location just off the 101 makes it easy to drive right by, but boy what a mistake that would be. This darling is the real deal—quaint and cosy, complete with a pressed-tin ceiling, smoky glass fixtures and colourful tile floor. That wall lined with French vintages isn’t just for show; take your pick and the waiter will pluck that bottle for your table as well.
The cooking features spot-on classics prepared with great care and little fuss. Highlights like plump frog legs drizzled in verdant pistou as well as the ever-so-slightly crisp red snapper sided by buttery potatoes and grilled romaine are delightful. For dessert, the vacherin with layers of tangy lemon meringue and berry ice cream, is textbook-perfect and oh-so-French.
We want to try…
Duck à l’orange with sunflower seed risotto and turnips ($32).
